Class Notes

MAY:

ABC COUNTDOWN:

I cannot believe that we are counting down to the end of the school year. We are having fun with our letter days!  Thank you for a wonderful school year and supporting your child’s learning!  I hope you have a great summer!

READING:

In reading, we will finish the unit, Character Studies.  Students have focused on characters and their traits and followed them along the story mountain (story elements) as their characters face problems and find solutions, have grown ideas about characters, and compared characters.  We also will finish reading, Because of Winn-Dixie and Dyamonde Daniel. To celebrate our unit, we will have a party, similar to the one Opal and Winn-Dixie have in the book and watch, Because of Winn-Dixie

We will end the year with a combined reading and writing unit on research. Students will be learning research skills and practice them doing a country project.  Each student will choose a country and will do research, using both books and the internet.  Students are also responsible for drawing the map and flag of their country. In addition to learning and writing up a report, the students will create a display to help them present what they have learned.

Remember every student should continue to read at least 20 minutes each night and ALL summer long!

WRITING:

Writers will continue to analyze and interpret different texts by making a claim about the text and then writing an essay using evidence from the text and citing details and examples to back up their claim.  After writing their final essays, students will begin our last unit, Once Upon a Time.  In this unit, students will be adapting and writing fairy tales.  Students will become familiar with several classic fairy tales and be exposed to several adaptations.  They will develop a plan, use storytelling, and write adaptations of classic fairy tales.

PHONICS/WORD WORK:

Each student continues to work with their individualized spelling sorts and words to complete spelling, phonics, vocabulary, and other activities to practice spelling patterns.  Look for word sort to come home!

MATH:

Students continue to work on Unit 6, Geometry.  Students will explore polygons by describing, classifying, and making generalizations about two-dimensional shapes, particularly quadrilaterals.  Students will combine geometry and measurement as students measure the perimeters and areas of polygons. Finally, students will combine their polygon and fraction knowledge to explore different fractions of polygons using geoboards.

Students will move on to Unit 7, Extending Multiplication and Fractions.  We will continue to review multiplication and division facts, work with larger numbers (11s and 12s), and use multiplication and division in different situations.   They will even explore some one by two digit multiplication problemsStudents will also explore fractions on a ruler and on a number line, equivalent fractions, and comparing fractions.  Students will also collect, represent, and analyze data and place it on a circle graph or line plot.

May’s Number Corner will focus on investigating fractions and area with rectilinear figures; collecting products of multiplication facts and probability; practicing our multiplication and division fact fluency; placing fractions and mixed numbers on a number line, and solving multiplication and division problems.

Remember to check out my website for great fact practice games and activities you can do at home!  Please continue to practice facts over the summer!

SCIENCE:

In science, they will continue looking at the solar system and learn about the phases of the moon.

SOCIAL STUDIES:

In social studies, we will continue to work on map skills and communities, as well as discussing and following current events through Scholastic News.
